Experience and Education
- High school graduation, vocational school, or GED, plus six months experience as a Senior Animal Technician, or equivalent experience.
- Certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science preferred or eligible.
Job Duties
- Participate in care and management of specialized animal programs, including breeding colonies, animal conditioning, and barrier-sustained animals.
- Maintain accurate and complete records for monitoring and surveillance of animal programs.
- Assist in specialized monitoring and surveillance programs.
- Review and comply with all SOPs and quality assurance standards.
- Maintain accurate departmental animal housing or support area record keeping.
- Euthanize and dispose of animal carcasses following established procedures.
- Assist in SPF animal colony maintenance and production, utilizing sterile techniques to maintain animal health.
- Participate in providing training of Animal Technicians and Animal Care Attendants.
- Prepare required reports to faculty and supervisors relative to animal colonies, equipment, and supply needs.
- Maintain required attendance level and adherence to work schedule.
- May provide direction and guidance to several Animal Technicians.
- Ability to work weekends as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to operate and maintain all types of equipment used in assigned duties.
- Extreme accuracy and proficiency in maintaining area records and performance of technical procedures.
- Extreme accuracy in monitoring environment, animal health, equipment care, and performance of animal care duties.
- Lifting and moving heavy materials and equipment.
- Exposure to animal odors and contact with animals, which may harbor zoonotic diseases.
- Exposure to hazardous chemical, physical, or biological agents.
- Ability to perform duties of considerable complexity.
- Devising new work methods and interpreting policy.
- High degree of ingenuity, initiative, and/or judgment.
- Contact with principal investigators and other research laboratory personnel.

- Work is performed primarily in laboratory area.
