Essential Responsibilities

  • Delivers appropriate acute clinical care to the Yale community, encompassing students, non-students, and all Yale Health members.
  • Employs the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation while attending to each patient.
  • Provides acute and ongoing care guidance for both adult and pediatric patients and their families in a walk-in setting, including care coordination as necessary.
  • Ensures optimal clinical outcomes through adherence to evidence-based triage protocols and nursing standards of care.
  • Facilitates seamless outpatient care by collaborating with colleagues, physicians, and other clinical partners to ensure alignment of goals and effective communication.
  • Complies with Yale Health patient safety standards regarding medication administration, IV therapy, and all treatments and procedures performed in Acute Care.
  • Meets regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Acts as a vital member of a care team, delegating tasks appropriately based on a clear understanding of defined roles within the Acute Care environment.
  • Observes Yale Health HIPAA policies and maintains confidentiality. Trains and orients new staff as needed and assesses competencies of department personnel.
  • Exhibits a holistic and compassionate approach throughout the nurse-patient relationship, applying principles of patient and family-centered care.
Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing with a minimum of two years of experience in medical-surgical nursing.

Position Overview

Established in 1971, Yale University created Yale Health to provide comprehensive health services to its faculty, staff, and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Yale Health serves over 47,000 members, including students, staff, faculty, and their families from across the country and around the globe. Our state-of-the-art facility features over 150 providers and includes a 144,000 square foot medical center with more than 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility, a diagnostic imaging suite, and a full-service retail pharmacy.

The Clinical Nurse collaborates with the care team to deliver direct patient care to designated patient populations within a unit. This role involves providing daily clinical support and nursing care while integrating administrative tasks within a clinical department. In support of the Clinical Nurse Manager and Chief of Medical Service, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for ensuring the achievement of strategic objectives and the mission within the related patient service line.

As a key member of the care team, the Clinical Nurse demonstrates exceptional clinical judgment and critical thinking skills to support organizational goals and deliver high-quality care efficiently. Patient and family-centered care is prioritized in all operational areas. The role fosters a culture of safety, staff engagement, and service excellence to promote a positive work environment. Close collaboration with nursing, clinician, and physician staff is essential to consistently meet standards of care.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

Demonstrated nursing experience with at least two years in a medical-surgical or critical care setting, whether in a hospital or outpatient/ambulatory facility. Experience in ambulatory care, primary care (sub-acute facility), or a college health center is preferred. Critical care experience may include ICU, ED, or SICU. EKG interpretation skills are beneficial for certain specialties.
