Position Overview

Sargent & Lundy's Government Services Division is at the forefront of engineering design and advisory services, providing vital support to the management and operational contractors for U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) facilities and national laboratories. Our focus includes assisting the DOE Environmental Management Directorate and the National Nuclear Security Administration, enabling you to contribute to multi-disciplinary design teams dedicated to addressing environmental remediation from historical nuclear weapons production and ensuring the integrity of our nation's nuclear capabilities.

In this role, you will leverage your academic expertise to design processes for both new and existing systems. Your responsibilities will include evaluating and reviewing energy and industrial facilities, preparing detailed reports and calculations to assess proposed system designs, enhancements, modifications, and equipment replacements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams to:
  • Assess and review the design of energy and industrial process projects.
  • Develop preliminary engineering studies for modifications and retrofitting projects.
  • Analyze technical challenges, compile system specification data, and communicate findings to clients and colleagues.
  • Contribute to Sargent & Lundy's commitment to national security initiatives.
  • Manage daily work priorities across multiple projects while responding to project manager requests.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, design drawings, and comprehensive reports.
  • Conduct calculations related to chemical inventories of waste tanks, utilizing sample data and process knowledge.
  • Gain insights into radiation shielding to support nuclear facility clients, aiming to perform shielding analyses using MicroShield and MCNP software.
  • Develop skills in system reliability analysis through fault trees, event trees, and reliability block diagrams.
  • Pursue professional engineering licensure.
  • Work within an NQA-1 quality assurance framework.
  • Conduct hazard and safety analyses to ensure the safe design and operation of nuclear systems.
  • Perform risk assessments and devise strategies to mitigate potential hazards in nuclear operations.
  • Stay updated on industry standards, process system design, and technological advancements.
  • Engage in industry code committees and conferences.
  • Assist in developing nuclear and radiological readiness exercise programs for domestic and international partners.
  • Provide technical support in nuclear operations, nonproliferation, and security, including training and exercises for clients.
  • Offer program management and technical support related to nuclear operations and assessments.
  • Enhance your career through peer learning and knowledge sharing within S&L's System of Processes.

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. Citizen; dual citizenship with another country does not qualify.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • A BS or MS in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with a solid academic foundation.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in a nuclear-related field.
  • Practical understanding of nuclear engineering applications and technologies.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to swiftly identify and prioritize issues, devise solutions, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Experience with nuclear materials and waste processes.
  • Familiarity with 10 CFR Part 830 - Nuclear Safety Management and DOE Standards.

Valued but Not Required Skills and Experience:

  • Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and designation as an Engineer-in-Training.
  • Relevant prior experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of MicroShield and MCNP software.
  • Familiarity with federal regulatory programs such as the Clean Air Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
  • Current Security Clearance.
