Job Summary

The University of Alabama seeks a highly experienced and skilled professional to serve as the Assistant Vice President of Research Finance. This key leadership position is responsible for directing and executing all activities related to the leadership and management of the Contract and Grant Accounting (CGA) department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and execute all activities related to the leadership and management of CGA, including preparing federal reports and surveys, internal financial projections and reporting, training and education, and continuous improvement.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate all financial operational and strategic activities.
  • Provide oversight of day-to-day financial operations for sponsored grants and contracts, with a focus on promoting a culture of strong ethics and compliance while providing exemplary customer service to faculty and other key stakeholders.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and manage the performance of financial personnel.
  • Ensure post-award processes are coordinated appropriately to maintain federal, industry, and professional standards.
  • Manage risk to the University by monitoring compliance with applicable federal and non-federal policies, regulations, and laws related to post-award grant and contract accounting activities, cost accounting standards, and general accounting policies and procedures.
  • Serve as an authorized University representative in support of financial matters related to sponsored projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and fifteen (15) years of experience; OR master's and thirteen (13) years of experience.
  • Experience in grant and contract accounting, audits, and financial compliance at a research-intensive organization.
  • Experience providing leadership and mentorship to departmental staff in all aspects of financial management.
  • Demonstrated evidence of collaborative work in a team environment and participation in the professional recruitment, development, and management of team members.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree.
  • Some experience creating and communicating specifications for new systems and applications to be used by staff and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience in assessing challenges and solutions, setting goals, tracking progress, and reporting on progress toward achieving goals.
