Maintenance Specialist III

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Specialist III to join our team at the Town of Blacksburg, VA. As a key member of our Public Works Utilities team, you will be responsible for performing skilled trades work operating a variety of heavy equipment to install, maintain, and repair water and sewer systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment including backhoes, excavators, skid-steer loaders, and snow removal equipment
  • Perform manual labor for water and sewer main installations and water meter maintenance
  • Remove snow as required and install and maintain fire hydrants
  • Perform maintenance on heavy equipment and serve as a supervisor in the absence of the Foreman
  • Be on call for after-hours emergencies
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Moderate experience in heavy equipment operation and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid commercial driver's license with Class A endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or ability to obtain within six months
  • VDOT Flagger Certification within six months
  • Trench and Confined Space training within six months
Working Conditions

This position requires regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. Work requires standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, and lifting. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
