DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Physical Planning, Development & Operations (PPDO) department oversees all university activities related to physical and environmental planning, design and construction, engineering, maintenance, and operations. The main campus spans over 2,000 acres and includes more than 500 buildings, totaling over 8 million square feet. The department manages a budget exceeding $54 million and a project portfolio of approximately $950 million, employing over 370 full-time staff to fulfill the necessary duties for campus development and operations.

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, the Lead Facilities Maintenance Technician is tasked with performing unskilled and semi-skilled cleaning and general maintenance duties across various campus facilities, including offices, classrooms, laboratories, auditoriums, restrooms, and other designated public areas. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned areas, either independently or as part of a team, while executing custodial functions.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $23.14/hour
In accordance with California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to disclose a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary listed above is the budgeted amount the University anticipates paying, and the final salary should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Daily Cleaning Responsibilities
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, dust, clean, and/or vacuum floor surfaces in hallways, corridors, stairs, lounges, outside steps, terraces, window sills, and other designated areas using a variety of cleaning solutions and supplies.
  • Clean and disinfect restroom and shower room fixtures, air vents, shower curtains, and drains. Empty wastebaskets and other receptacles.
  • Unstop minor drain blockages.
  • Wash glass and trim on entrance doors.
  • Receive and stock custodial supplies.
  • Report items that need repair.
  • Rearrange or move furniture, supplies, and miscellaneous equipment, as directed.
25% - Periodic Cleaning Responsibilities
  • Clean woodwork, light fixtures, Venetian blinds, radiators, grills, ducts, walls, blackboards, washing machines, dryers, and other types of equipment.
  • Wax and/or polish furniture.
25% - Miscellaneous Cleaning Responsibilities
  • Spot clean carpets, upholstered furniture, draperies and other designated materials.
  • Make beds, change linen, towels, etc. Wash interior windows and exterior, where accessible without a ladder.
  • Properly use cleaning compounds according to directions indicated on labels.
  • Read and understand chemical safety information and warning signs.
  • Work with and direct activities of summer temporary custodians as needed and keep supervisors informed of all work completed.
  • Interact with campus staff/visitors regarding assigned duties as needed.
10% - Building Security Responsibilities
  • Lock and unlock buildings according to written instructions.
  • Carry out emergency procedures (communicating with Fire and Police personnel), and evacuate buildings in the event of a fire or other disasters.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of custodial equipment and tools such as vacuum cleaners, powered floor polishers, industrial carpet cleaners, mops, carts, buckets, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe use of custodial equipment, chemicals, tools, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and follow oral and written instructions, read manuals, signs, and labels.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Skill in prioritizing workload to meet daily schedule.
  • Ability to accommodate changing priorities and complete tasks despite intermittent interruptions.
  • Ability to carry and operate technology, including tablets and cell phones along with the use of programs and applications.
  • Knowledge of procedures related to building safety.
  • Ability to safeguard keys issued, which are necessary for assigned areas.
  • Ability to incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
