GENERAL OVERVIEW:

A Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for upholding the regulations set forth by the Sheriff's Department at a proficient level. This role involves executing assigned responsibilities that protect both individuals and property. The position operates under the direct supervision of the Sheriff's Department hierarchy.

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)

Ensuring the safety of individuals and property; transporting detainees; executing court orders and legal documents; conducting levies and overseeing individuals in custody; enforcing judicial mandates, including restraining orders; securing property and maintaining order in accordance with criminal and civil statutes; preparing documentation and processing legal paperwork; assisting law enforcement during court-related incidents; performing duties as mandated by law, regulation, or court directive; attending civil legal training sessions; may be assigned to various court functions; performing related tasks as necessary.

  • Civil Duties
    • Serve civil documents, legal writs, and protection orders; conduct sheriff levies and manage child custody documentation; operate independently with minimal oversight; willing to participate in training and educational opportunities as designated by the Sheriff or their representative; successful completion of the required probationary period.
  • Transport Duties
    • Transport detainees to and from various correctional facilities; conduct searches of individuals being transported for contraband; willing to engage in training and educational opportunities as designated by the Sheriff or their representative; successful completion of the required probationary period.
  • Warrant Duties
    • Execute bench warrants, domestic warrants, and probation violations; available for after-hours on-call duties; willing to engage in training and educational opportunities as designated by the Sheriff or their representative; successful completion of the required probationary period.
  • Court Duties
    • Ensure courtroom security; manage detainees and escort them to court; provide security for the courthouse, courtroom, county personnel, and the public; transport detainees between correctional facilities; assist judges and court staff in facilitating courtroom operations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of the methods and techniques commonly utilized in law enforcement security and transport operations.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of the criminal and civil justice systems, including procedural rules.
  • Awareness of the objectives and goals of law enforcement at the county level.
  • Proficiency in the use and maintenance of firearms.
  • Ability to maintain order, including managing disruptive individuals in various situations.
  • Capability to navigate geographical locations, including alternative routes across the county and state.
  • Competence in record-keeping and report preparation.
  • Knowledge of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, the Rules of Criminal Procedure, and Arrest Laws.
  • Familiarity with the operation of provided equipment, including Sheriff's Department vehicles, radios, pagers, first-aid supplies, and other necessary tools.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience that has equipped the candidate with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • ACT 120 OR ACT 2 CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED.
