Job Overview

GENERAL DEFINITION:

A Deputy Sheriff is responsible for enforcing the regulations set forth by the Sheriff's Department at a comprehensive performance level. This role involves executing assigned responsibilities that protect both lives and property. The position reports directly through the established chain of command within the Sheriff's Department.

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)

Ensuring the security of lives and property; transporting inmates; serving court orders and legal writs; conducting levies and supervising prisoners; enforcing court mandates, including injunctions; securing property and maintaining order in accordance with criminal and civil codes; preparing reports and processing legal documents; assisting law enforcement during court incidents; performing duties as mandated by statute, regulation, or court order; attending civil legal updates courses; may be assigned to various court functions; performing related duties as necessary.

  • Civil Responsibilities
    • Serve civil documents, writs, and protection orders; execute sheriff levies and child custody papers; operate independently with minimal oversight; willing to pursue continuing education or specialized training as designated by the Sheriff or their representative; successful completion of the required probationary period.
  • Transport Responsibilities
    • Transport inmates to and from various correctional facilities; conduct searches of individuals being transported for contraband; willing to pursue continuing education or specialized training as designated by the Sheriff or their representative; successful completion of the required probationary period.
  • Warrant Responsibilities
    • Execute bench warrants, domestic warrants, and probation violations; available for after-hours on-call work; willing to pursue continuing education or specialized training as designated by the Sheriff or their representative; successful completion of the required probationary period.
  • Court Responsibilities
    • Maintain security within the courtroom; manage prisoners and escort them to court; provide security for the courthouse, courtroom, County personnel, and the public; transport prisoners between correctional facilities; assist judges and court staff to facilitate courtroom operations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of methods and techniques commonly used in law enforcement security and transport operations.
  • Familiarity with the principles and practices of the criminal and civil justice systems, including procedural rules.
  • Awareness of the objectives and goals of law enforcement at the County level.
  • Proficiency in the use and maintenance of firearms.
  • Ability to maintain order, including managing disruptive individuals in various situations.
  • Capability to navigate geographical locations, including alternative routes across the County and State.
  • Competence in record-keeping and report preparation.
  • Knowledge of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code, the Rules of Criminal Procedure, and Laws of Arrest.
  • Familiarity with the use of equipment provided, such as Sheriff's Department vehicles, radios, pagers, first-aid supplies, rubber gloves, firearms, expandable batons, handcuffs, and other necessary tools.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above.
  • ACT 120 OR ACT 2 CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED.
