Job Overview:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a part-time Engineering Laboratory Technician. This role is essential in supporting both curricular and extracurricular activities within the Engineering and Computer Aided Drafting and Design programs. The laboratory is equipped with advanced tools including 3D printers, CNC machinery, and laser cutting devices, among other prototyping and analytical instruments. While prior experience with these technologies is not mandatory, a strong willingness to learn and a commitment to maintaining a safe and professional lab environment are crucial.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and ensure the safe operation of laboratory equipment
  • Collaborate with equipment manufacturers for maintenance and repairs
  • Assist in managing the inventory and insurance processes for college equipment
  • Organize lab schedules and coordinate equipment usage
  • Mentor work-study students, guiding them to become leaders in the laboratory
  • Develop a comprehensive repository of print and video tutorials for equipment operation and maintenance
  • Design and conduct workshops for students in the college and K-12 service areas
  • Provide support to faculty and staff as required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with computer-aided design software and additive manufacturing techniques
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with microcontroller systems such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi
  • Practical knowledge of laser cutting, CNC milling, and other prototyping tools
