JOB TITLE: Family Support Peer

ROLE OVERVIEW

As a Family Support Peer, you will play a crucial role in providing empathetic peer assistance to families and youth engaged in child and adolescent services. Your responsibilities will include helping families connect with support teams, recognizing their strengths, and fostering vital skills in family advocacy, resilience, and self-care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide peer support and direction to families navigating behavioral health systems and community resources.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to ensure comprehensive care for clients.
  • Empower families and youth by promoting their voice and choice in decision-making.
  • Assist in recognizing strengths and needs while encouraging resilience-building techniques.
  • Build trusting relationships with parents and caregivers to respectfully address their needs.
  • Guide families in understanding and managing their child's requirements and available services.
  • Coach families on effective communication and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Encourage parents and caregivers to engage with support services and enhance their parenting skills.
  • Advocate for parents and caregivers, providing guidance on self-advocacy.
  • Connect families with appropriate support services and resources.
  • Engage families through various communication methods to provide ongoing support and guidance.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to empathize with the challenges faced by parents and caregivers of children with complex needs.
  • Collaborative approach and capacity to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong team player with adaptability and readiness to manage change and crises.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should possess experience as a parent or primary caregiver of a child with emotional or behavioral challenges. Familiarity with Virginia's behavioral health systems is also essential. A high school diploma or GED is the minimum educational requirement.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURE

Required certifications include Virginia Certified Peer Recovery Specialist, WRAP Facilitator Certification (to be obtained within six months of employment), First Aid/CPR, Therapeutic Options, and a valid Virginia driver's license.
