Associate Director, Global and Emerging Risks Research Division

Job Summary:

RAND is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Associate Director to lead the Global and Emerging Risks Research Division. The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating and overseeing the division's strategic plan, managing research centers, and collaborating with senior leaders to enhance business development and global impact.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the division's research centers, including the Technology and Security Policy Center, Meselson Center, China Research Center, and Center for Climate and Energy Futures.
  • Manage the division's methods centers, including the Center for Applied Network Analysis, Center for Causal Inference, Center for Gaming, Center for Qualitative and Mixed Methods, Center for Scalable Computing and Analysis, RAND Frederick S. Pardee Center for Longer Range Global Policy and the Future Human Condition, and RAND Forecasting Initiative.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to enhance business development, increase global impact, and ensure a coordinated approach to government engagement and development efforts.
  • Represent RAND to senior officials, heads of state, and dignitaries around the world to enhance RAND's reputation and impact.
  • Support the development and execution of the division's strategic plan, including revenue and hiring targets.
Requirements:
  • Exceptional executive management skills, including leadership, interpersonal, and teamwork abilities.
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing, multidisciplinary teams and to coach and mentor senior leaders and researchers/policy experts.
  • Recognized expert on one of the division's focus areas (AI, synthetic biology, China, or climate) with an established network of contacts in government, academia, and industry.
  • Excellent analytic skills, along with the ability to manage research quality, understand a broad array of research methods, and explain RAND's overall analytical capabilities to internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, including working with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives across all levels and around the world.
Education and Experience:
  • Master's or PhD in a related field.
  • Proven senior-level management experience in a non-profit research institute or university setting, a for-profit entity with significant government client relationships, or government, along with analytical experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years of related experience.
  • Experience working directly with senior national security officials preferred.
Security Clearance:

Current possession of a U.S. security clearance, or the ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance, is required.

Location:

This position is based in Washington, DC; Pittsburgh, PA; or Santa Monica, CA, with the opportunity to work from home and the office. Relocation assistance may be available.

Salary Range:

$152,700 - $262,500
