Position Overview

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Chicago is in search of a Head of Institutional Fundraising, a crucial leadership role within the Development department. This position is responsible for spearheading a dynamic team and overseeing all fundraising initiatives from institutional sources, including foundations, corporations, and competitive government grants. The individual will formulate and execute the comprehensive strategy, implementation, and evaluation metrics pertaining to institutional fundraising.

This role is essential for ensuring the organization’s sustainable growth by establishing a robust pipeline of funders and supporters. The Head of Institutional Fundraising will report directly to the Chief Development Officer and collaborate closely with the Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors to enhance relationships, while also engaging externally in the cultivation and development of donors and prospects.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • Develop and implement the strategic plan to achieve current and future fundraising objectives related to formal foundations, corporate institutions, and competitive government grants.
  • Ensure the successful achievement of annual fundraising targets for the team, including personal and direct report contributions.
  • Manage a portfolio of institutional donors and prospects actively.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective donors within the designated portfolio.
  • Assist in identifying new potential donors for the annual fund to maintain a healthy pipeline of prospects at all levels of engagement and solicitation.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and other volunteer leadership groups to leverage and manage donor relationships effectively.
  • Support the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Development Officer in outreach and fundraising initiatives.
  • Draft and customize letters of request, donor proposals, and other communications for the donor portfolio.
  • Foster a culture of strong donor stewardship based on appreciation and gratitude.
  • Lead and coordinate all initiatives and events focused on institutional donors aimed at engaging, cultivating, and stewarding both current and prospective donors.
  • Review and approve proposals and reports prepared by direct reports or contracted writers.
  • Create proposals and reports as necessary.

Operations

  • Work in collaboration with Development Operations team members to ensure the accuracy of grant agreements, donor management functions, awards, and other compliance details are accurately recorded in the donor CRM database and other necessary locations.

Management

  • Oversee direct reports and contractors, providing ongoing support, motivation, and constructive feedback regarding progress toward clearly defined performance goals established annually.
  • Ensure the Institutional Fundraising team maintains high levels of client satisfaction by delivering exceptional stewardship.
  • Partner with the Development Operations team to monitor activity metrics for the giving dashboard and provide monthly assessments of progress toward goals for the Institutional Fundraising portfolio.

Leadership

  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the organization.
  • Serve as a member of the senior development team.
  • Participate in the Supervisor Cohort for cross-departmental team building and organizational leadership.
  • Represent the organization at external events.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned as part of a collaborative team effort.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Over ten years of experience in institutional fundraising, with a proven track record of success in direct fundraising.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet fundraising or sales objectives.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a professional environment.
  • A criminal background check and verification of employment and degrees will be required.
