Job Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Supervisor CICU is responsible for managing the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children's Hospital Colorado. This role involves implementing and maintaining policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure high-quality patient care. The successful candidate will lead a team of nurses and other healthcare professionals in providing direct patient care, ensuring compliance with quality and safety initiatives, and partnering with a multidisciplinary team to meet the clinical needs of patients and families.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the implementation and maintenance of unit-specific policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Lead unit team members in providing direct patient care, demonstrating expert clinical knowledge, and promoting the application of the Professional Practice Model and Professional Standards
  • Serve as a charge nurse, preparing schedules and assigning team members to patients, overseeing admission, discharge, and general flow of patients, and monitoring and ordering medicines and supplies
  • Work with team members to create individualized plans of care to meet patient needs
  • Interpret and explain regulatory standards and hospital policies, procedures, and rules to employees and ensure compliance with applicable quality and safety initiatives and practices
  • Ensure staffing resources are utilized appropriately and shifts resources to meet both patient and unit needs
  • Partner with a multidisciplinary team in meeting the clinical needs of patients and families
  • Resolve operational and patient/family issues, making decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives and solving underlying problems
  • Assist team members in achieving unit outcomes, performance, and professional development standards; identify opportunities for continual improvement
  • Champion clinical practice and professional growth by working with the CNE/CNS to meet the educational needs of the unit and by monitoring and evaluating staff competencies
  • Develop, coach, and evaluate team members; mentor team members in creating/evaluating projects focused on improving clinical practice
  • Provide advice to Clinical Manager on decisions involving hiring, terminations, promotions, and disciplinary actions as required
  • Monitor expenditures for the unit and participate in the development of budget recommendations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing; Master's degree in Nursing or a directly related healthcare field is preferred
  • Three years of clinical experience; previous pediatric cardiac intensive care experience is strongly preferred
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
  • BLS/CPR certification from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire
  • ANCC recognized certification in clinical specialty
  • Depending on the unit/department, employees may also be required to have Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Adult Advanced Life Support (ACLS), and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification

Competencies:

  • Expert knowledge in medical/clinical operations
  • Expert knowledge in principles of communication: verbal and written, to deal with all levels of personnel
  • Excellent customer service skills with hospital/clinic staff, children, parents, and visitors
  • Solid knowledge of computer use and software to include MS office and other software used for hospital operations
  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with personnel
  • Ability to utilize motivational techniques to develop leadership and decision-making within the department

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform essential functions of the job
  • Body movement: will frequently stand/walk for 6-8 hours per day
  • Will frequently use hands while keyboarding and writing
  • Will frequently sit for 2-4 hours per day while accessing computer, talking on the telephone, and while attending meetings
  • Back and Upper Body (lifting and carrying): will occasionally lift/force exerted up to 100 pounds
  • Vision: constantly uses sight in performance for daily job duties
  • Hearing: constantly uses hearing in performance for daily job duties
  • Others: able to assist or assume direct patient care as census directly permits
