UAV Robotics Engineer Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled UAV Robotics Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing UAV systems and payloads.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead hands-on mechanical engineering projects with a diverse team of engineers and technicians.
  • Design mechanical systems using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other modeling/design tools as needed.
  • Develop and integrate UAV systems and payloads, including fabrication, assembly, and testing.
  • Work closely with APL electrical engineers, systems engineers, software engineers, fabrication shops, and external vendors to ensure project requirements and deadlines are met.
  • Conduct field testing of UAV systems and prepare technical documentation of test results.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience designing, fabricating, integrating, testing, and/or operating UAV airframes.
  • Experience with CAD software and an understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups to meet deadlines and deliver results.
  • Willingness to support local and remote field testing.
  • Ability to quickly learn and develop new skills to support novel engineering efforts.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or related field.
  • Current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate and experience with manually piloting UAVs.
  • Experience with integrating, tuning, and operating open-source UAV autopilot firmware.
  • Experience with small UAV electronics and sensors.
  • Experience with stress or thermal analysis using finite element software packages.
