About the Role

The Operations Manager (Power Generation) is accountable for supervising personnel and overseeing all activities within the Waste to Energy Refuse Derived Fuel Power Plant operations. This role ensures the continuous operation of the power generation facility in accordance with established safety and environmental regulations, production schedules, output requirements, and contractual commitments. The Operations Manager will report directly to the Facility Manager and is expected to uphold a high standard of safety and environmental practices while promoting best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the power plant operations team, ensuring the efficient operation of boilers, turbine-generators, and auxiliary equipment to maximize power generation output while adhering to all federal and state environmental regulations.
  • Possess a solid understanding of steam, turbine, boiler equipment, and conveying systems.
  • Support the NERC/FERC/FRCC Internal Compliance Program (ICP), ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills to collaborate across multiple functions and effectively communicate with operators, mechanics, peers, and leadership.
  • Ensure shift supervisors comply with all company, state, and federal policies regarding environmental standards, safety, and employee relations.
  • Lead improvement initiatives, network with professional organizations, and maintain strong connections with regional and corporate maintenance and technical groups.
  • Document daily production and capacity, providing reports to the Facility Operations Manager and relevant authorities.
  • Accompany regulatory representatives on plant inspection tours, addressing discrepancies as necessary.
  • Review daily logs of shift activities and operator logs to ensure compliance and efficiency.
  • Monitor maintenance requests and collaborate with the Power Plant Maintenance Superintendent on work order backlogs.
  • Participate in outage planning, scheduling manpower, and ordering necessary materials and supplies.
  • Oversee the inventory of materials and chemicals required for plant operations, requisitioning additional supplies as needed.
  • Maintain work schedules for all operational shifts, ensuring continuous coverage and managing overtime for vacations and holidays.
  • Promote safety awareness and compliance with plant safety policies, participating in weekly safety meetings.
  • Ensure the facility is clean, safe, and orderly, enforcing housekeeping standards.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for shift supervisors and review operator evaluations.
  • Facilitate formal training sessions in power plant operations, ensuring all operators receive adequate training.
  • Manage employee relations within the department, recommending and reviewing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by the Facility Operations Manager or other management personnel.
Qualifications:
  • A minimum of five years of experience in power plant operations, with at least two years in a supervisory capacity.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Must be respirator fit qualified.
  • ASME/QRO Certification required, with the ability to obtain site-specific Chief Operator Certification within six months.
  • Comprehensive understanding of power plant equipment and systems, with extensive experience in a power generation facility, preferably in a management or supervisory role. Specific expertise in resource recovery material handling is advantageous.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Qualification to wear a full-face respirator.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions.
Work Schedule:
  • Monday through Friday during the day, with occasional evenings and weekends.
