Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Underwriting Consultant to join our team at Penn Mutual. As a key member of our underwriting team, you will be responsible for underwriting and overseeing the selection of risk for large complex life applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Select and classify risks according to company philosophy and standards.
- Make decisions within approval and/or viewing limit up to $15,000,000, up to age 85, substandard approval limit up to 500%; limits established based on experience.
- Assist others with resolving complex issues while ensuring adherence to underwriting standards and objectives.
- Participate in department initiatives; assist in recommending/ implementing changes to improve productivity, profitability, growth and quality.
- Provide mentoring, training and coaching.
- Manage retention.
- Maintain profitable mortality experience.
- Analyze and interpret medical, non-medical and financial information.
- Determine appropriate requirements.
- Review and provide signatures on referrals from underwriters.
- Identify and provide solutions to work related problems and issues.
- Communicate and collaborate with the field and home office to provide the highest quality service levels to customers.
- Maintain positive and effective relationships with internal and external partners.
- Participate in major projects.
- Comply with all company and site policies and procedures.
- Remain current in profession and industry trends.
- Successfully complete regulatory and job training requirements.
Requirements
- Highly developed knowledge of underwriting function.
- Large, complex case expertise with prior approval authority of at least $10M.
- Ability to adapt to change and excel in a fast-paced environment.
- General awareness of current affairs, industry issues and trends, both corporate and external.
- Solid knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirements.
- Strong knowledge of insurance products (plans, riders, benefits) and illustrations and how they are marketed.
- Strong knowledge of reinsurance marketplace to work proactively with the field where reinsurance is an opportunity.
- Thorough understanding of automatic reinsurance agreements.
- Highly developed knowledge of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on mortality.
- Highly developed knowledge of financial and other non-medical underwriting factors.
- Thorough knowledge of product pricing.
- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical skills, ability to define, research and resolve problems.
- Proven ability to work successfully in a remote environment.
- Ability to create and maintain customer relationships.
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively under deadlines balancing published service times with an appropriate customer focus.
- Ability to comprehend, retain and apply current technical information to daily work issues.
- Ability to make a positive contribution as demonstrated by learning new skills and making suggestions for process/procedure improvement.
- Ability to work with others in a collaborative team environment.
Education/Licenses/Professional Designations
- College degree required, equivalent work experience in life Underwriting may be considered.
- FLMI, FALU and ACS designations or current coursework toward earning certificates.
