At Stony Brook Medicine, a Histology Clinical Laboratory Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering clinical services to our diverse patient population. This position adheres to all laboratory protocols and procedures, ensuring optimal patient care and maintaining safe operational equipment. Ideal candidates will exhibit exceptional patient care abilities and possess excellent communication skills while upholding our commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Process and embed various specimens, including biopsies, routine surgical samples, placentas, autopsy, and research tissues.
- Utilize paraffin microtomy techniques to create sections ranging from 2 to 5 microns.
- Prepare, stain, coverslip, and assemble histology sections, ensuring accurate labeling and distribution.
- Adhere to established protocols for all Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) including Copath, Ventana Benchmark, Ultra, Symphony, Vantage, and Copath.
- Manage routine and special requests for additional levels, recuts, special stains, and immunohistochemistry, verifying completion in Copath and documenting for quality assurance.
- Conduct a variety of special stains and immunohistochemistry utilized in diagnostic histopathology.
- Rotate responsibilities for laboratory instrumentation maintenance, including reagent changes and daily QA documentation for maintenance and temperature logs.
- Assist Pathologists with grossing biopsy specimens as assigned.
Required: New York State License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist or documented eligibility. A Bachelor’s degree in biology, medical technology, or related life sciences, or an Associate's degree from an accredited Histotechnology program. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for this role. HT (ASCP) certification or eligibility is preferred.
Preferred: At least one year of clinical laboratory experience in Histology, including special stains, immunohistochemistry, and microtomy. A Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, biology, or a related life science is advantageous. Experience with renal, nerve, muscle specimens, and biopsy grossing is also preferred.
Additional Information:
This position is part of a smoke-free environment, and all hospital roles may require adjustments in pass days and shifts as necessary. Candidates may need to wear respiratory protection, which could restrict facial hair. This role may be designated as "essential," meaning employees may be required to report to work during institutional emergencies.
Pre-employment Requirements:
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination and medical clearance.
- Completion of an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.
- Passing a 4-panel drug screen.
- Meeting regulatory requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Providing copies of any required New York State licenses or certificates.
