Job Summary:

As a Peer Support Specialist, you will work closely with our emergency shelter clients, providing non-judgmental support and guidance to help them achieve stable housing and improve their overall well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients in developing and implementing individualized housing plans, focusing on Housing First principles.
  • Facilitate relationships between clients and Housing Navigators, promoting trust and understanding.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to clients, helping them navigate mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Collaborate with Housing Support Counselors to ensure seamless service delivery and client progress.
  • Document client interactions, progress, and challenges, maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge in peer support and housing services.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; experience in social services or a related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of Housing First, Harm Reduction, Person-Centered, and Consumer-Choice models of care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including standing, walking, and lifting up to 75 pounds.

Working Conditions:

This position requires working in a shelter environment, interacting with clients who may be intoxicated, under the influence of unknown substances, or experiencing mental health crises. The ability to remain calm, patient, and compassionate in stressful situations is essential.
