Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Health Unit Coordinator to join our team at the University of Texas Medical Branch. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide exceptional support to our patients, families, and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clerical support to the healthcare team, including greeting patients, guests, and staff in a courteous manner.
  • Interact with patients and their families, providing services appropriate to the specialty and age of the patient.
  • Utilize professional telephone etiquette and promptly answer telephones and intercoms.
  • Use basic computer skills and printing equipment to retrieve and process clinical information.
  • Maintain bulletin boards, unit manuals, and files, ensuring they are current and in order.
  • Sort and distribute incoming unit mail, placing it in the appropriate place/mailbox.
  • Promptly and accurately enter and retrieve information through the Hospital Automated System.
  • Address or report guest/customer complaints/concerns and maintain unit Medical Records.
  • Compile statistics and data for reporting purposes and maintain census reports.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies on assigned unit, including tracking, ordering, and arranging repairs.
  • Assist in protocol for evaluation of new supplies and medical/nursing consultation.
  • Inventory and order office supplies and medical record forms.
  • Track and monitor sterile tray processing to prevent lost charges or missing instruments.
  • Meet patient needs that do not directly relate to medical or nursing care, including assisting with phone communications, patient room preparation, and indirect patient care duties.
  • Coordinate patient schedules with other hospital services/departments and inform patients of dates, times, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining the unit's environment, including aesthetic safety and cleanliness, and functional aspects.
  • Participate in and support continuous quality improvement activities at the unit, departmental, service, or hospital level.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Unit Coordinator/Clerk program, or one-year related job experience/college coursework.
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in typing, spelling, and medical terminology.
