Position Overview

The Health Department is looking for an ANIMAL CARE SPECIALIST to support the operations of the City/County Animal Control Shelter. Responsibilities include providing essential animal care, managing shelter cleanliness, offering customer assistance, educating the public, and performing administrative tasks to ensure the well-being of both animals and the community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Feed and provide water to animals, maintain cleanliness of cages and outdoor areas, and handle laundry duties.
  • Monitor animals for health issues, schedule veterinary appointments, and authorize medical treatments.
  • Administer first aid, medications, and vaccinations; manage microchip insertion.
  • Respond to public inquiries via phone and email, manage complaints, and dispatch animal control officers as needed.
  • Educate the public on animal care, licensing, and adoption processes.
  • Perform data entry, manage cash transactions, and oversee supply orders for the shelter.
  • Process animal intakes and adoptions, verify vaccination records, and issue licenses.
  • Coordinate outreach and adoption events, ensuring adequate staffing and supplies.
  • Maintain the Animal Control website and promote dog licensing through various channels.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and work within the incident command structure during emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in animal care, handling, or related clerical duties.
  • Experience in public interaction and physical labor.
  • Valid Montana Driver's License required.

Physical Demands:
Regular physical activity is required, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Exposure to various environmental conditions and animal interactions is expected.
