Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our team at Uncommon Schools. As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a critical role in providing academic and emotional support to students with special needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instructional Support
    • Modify and differentiate curriculum to meet the needs of students with special needs
    • Collaborate with general education teachers and special education teams to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
    • Provide academic, emotional, and physical support to students in the classroom and through pull-out, push-in, small group, and one-on-one instruction
  • Student Support
    • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard
    • Partner with students' families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs
    • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions to improve instructional strategies and student outcomes
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Collaborate with grade level teams to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies
    • Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement

  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred)
    • Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study
    • Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Certification is not required to be hired at Uncommon, but you do need to meet NY state certification eligibility requirements.
