Physical Requirements: The essential functions for this role include the capability to lift, carry, push, and pull weights on a daily basis, with frequent lifting of 25-50 pounds, as well as the ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.

Work Environment: Conditions may involve exposure to communicable diseases, radiation hazards, and risks associated with intractable patients or sharp instruments.

Shift Details: Must be available to work 36 hours each week, during the hours of 3 PM to 11 PM, Monday through Friday, with some holidays required.

Job Overview: Registered Nurses in the CVICU at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital deliver care primarily to adult patients. This unit specializes in the recovery of patients following surgical procedures, including heart bypass, post-operative cardiothoracic care, heart/lung transplants, and open-heart surgeries, as well as managing conditions such as congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, cardiogenic shock, and sepsis. Patient stays can vary from overnight to several weeks or months.

The unit is supported by a clinical nurse specialist who provides education, referrals, and consultations for staff, patients, and their families.

Key Responsibilities: The primary duties for this position include delivering comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care, which encompasses:

  • Assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a detailed nursing care plan.
  • Providing direct patient care and ensuring patient satisfaction.
  • Training and delegating responsibilities to Nursing Care Technicians (Nursing Assistants).
  • Adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

This role promotes collaborative efforts among nursing staff and the physician team to enhance communication and improve patient outcomes. It involves utilizing the nursing process alongside a comprehensive patient-centered care plan to ensure patient satisfaction.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities: The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of Maslow's eight Basic Human Needs and their prioritization within Gordon's Functional Health Patterns Framework, as well as Swanson's Caring model.
  • Exceptional direct patient care and critical thinking abilities.
  • Basic computer navigation skills and familiarity with the internet.
  • Professional and respectful communication skills with patients, families, co-workers, and physicians.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation skills.

The candidate should be highly motivated, proactive, and confident in advocating for patients and their families. A strong team-oriented mindset and open, honest communication with colleagues and physicians are essential.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional technical skills and a proven ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No.

Preferred Education/Experience: BSN with at least 1 year of RN experience preferred.
