Position Overview
The University of Southern Indiana invites applications for the role of Academic Advisor within the Romain College of Business. This position is essential in providing guidance to students enrolled in various business programs, ensuring they remain on track with their academic objectives and graduation requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Act as a primary liaison between the Romain College of Business and its student body, as well as other academic departments and the Registrar's Office.
2. Serve as the first point of contact for students seeking information about college programs.
3. Utilize academic records and placement scores to provide informed advice regarding course enrollment, including determining the necessity of enrollment exceptions and communicating any missing prerequisites or graduation criteria.
4. Make informed decisions regarding modifications to students' class schedules and appropriate course placements. Act as a resource for faculty, staff, and student workers regarding university and program information.
5. Maintain accurate student records, monitor academic progress, and facilitate necessary referrals for additional support.
6. Provide advising services during key periods such as major advising sessions, New Student Orientation, and throughout the academic semester as required.
7. Collaborate in the development and execution of a Diversity Plan aimed at enhancing recruitment and retention of underrepresented minority groups within the college.
8. Work alongside various university units to address the advising needs of special populations, including adult learners, student-athletes, federal and state aid recipients, at-risk students, veterans, students with disabilities, and international students.
9. Compile and analyze data for the College's advising assessment program as requested by the Advising Center Director.
10. Assist in the development of training programs for faculty and staff involved in advising within the college.
11. Participate in college promotional events such as Transfer Visit Days and Open Houses.
12. Stay informed about university policies, procedures, and curriculum changes relevant to the Romain College of Business.
13. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
- Capability to engage effectively with students and faculty from diverse cultural backgrounds and experience levels.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and email.
- Creativity and resourcefulness in developing innovative outreach strategies for current and prospective students, while maintaining positive interactions with all stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree.
- One year of experience in academic advising or a related field at the collegiate level.
- Experience working with a diverse student population, including those receiving federal and state aid and students facing academic challenges.
- Familiarity with NACADA Core Values, CAS professional standards, and federal regulations affecting students and faculty (e.g., FERPA).
Work Schedule:
- Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Occasional irregular hours may be required.
- Some travel may be necessary for professional development and related activities.
