Job Title: Assistant Director for Sports Communication

Norfolk State University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Director for Sports Communication to join our team. As a key member of our sports information office, you will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of the office, including serving as the primary media contact for select sports.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary media relations contact for select sports, including serving as the liaison between student-athletes, coaches, and administrators and media contacts.
  • Write press releases and feature stories, develop relationships with media members, and prepare for championships.
  • Provide oversight of the assistant sports information director position.
  • Compile in-game statistics and manage game day staff for select sports.
  • Direct social media strategy for assigned sports and assist in implementing the overall departmental social media strategy.
  • Create original content for NSUSpartans.com and various social media platforms, assist with graphics and video creation, and develop ideas.
  • Assist in setting up video/audio broadcasts as needed.
  • Manage archives of press releases, photos, statistics, and other collateral for historical and data analytics purposes.
  • Proactively pitch NSU stories to media outlets.
Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communications, public relations, or a related field.
  • Previous experience (at least 2-3 years) working in an athletic communications office or a related field.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Adobe Creative Suite, including video editing, graphics, and desktop publishing software.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Genius Sports and StatCrew software in multiple sports.
  • Experience with web management, social media strategy, and content creation.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights/weekends and/or holidays during peak seasons, and travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience serving as a media relations contact for basketball, volleyball, and baseball or softball.
  • Experience working with volleyball statistics software programs (StatCrew and/or Genius).
