Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and organized Patient Service Specialist to join our team at Steward Primary Care @ Tempe. As a key member of our administration team, you will be responsible for ensuring smooth day-to-day operations in our SMG physician practice.

Key Responsibilities
  • Answer calls and route telephone calls appropriately, taking messages and following through with each message to ensure that the appropriate physician/staff member receives the information.
  • Provide routine information to callers and give only authorized medical advice from a provider.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to all new and existing patients of the practice.
  • Create patient cases and document telephone calls and messages into Athena or other EMR.
  • Schedule patient appointments and appropriate testing for patients as requested.
  • Register patients in EMR and verify information, including demographics and obtain accurate health insurance information.
  • Conduct eligibility checks to ensure insurance is reflected accurately.
  • Collect required insurance co-pays from patients, including any prior balances.
  • Follow scheduling notes and direct schedules patient visits in other SMG practices as advised.
  • Perform pre-visit planning daily for all upcoming scheduled appointments, including running insurance eligibility.
  • Responsible to obtain prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as per practice need.
  • Perform outreach to select patient groups as directed for patient care and quality measurement/guidelines.
  • Schedule specialty appointments/testing as required.
  • Perform work in EMR buckets as directed and per practice need.
  • Responsible to inform manager of administrative supply needs or assists with ordering.
  • Follow up with providers on missing slips and create claims in Athena.
  • Responsible to work assigned revenue cycle buckets as directed.
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Adheres to SMG policies.
  • Always uses discretion to ensure patient confidentiality.
Requirements
  • Strong customer service excellence expected.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Experience with EMR strongly preferred (Athena a plus).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • One to three years as a medical secretary preferred.
