Position Summary:

Under the direct guidance of the Collection System Supervisor, the Collection System Worker II engages in various maintenance, operational, and repair activities related to the wastewater collection system and pump stations. This role involves operating diverse maintenance and construction equipment, including air compressors and jackhammers, assisting with collection system maintenance equipment such as pressurized hydro cleaners and sewer vacuum trucks, conducting emergency responses, performing line locating and marking, and assisting in the upkeep and repair of distribution system components as assigned. Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute a range of semi-skilled maintenance, operational, and repair tasks associated with the wastewater collection system and its pump stations.
  • Clean the wastewater collection system, storm drains, flood control facilities, and inlets; clear clogs in lines and maintain manholes, wet wells, and pump stations.
  • Assist in operating hydro cleaners and sewer vacuum trucks to flush systems and clear blockages.
  • Utilize sewer cleaners, jet rodders, and TV inspection equipment as needed.
  • Be available for on-call duties as scheduled by the Collection System Supervisor.
  • Inspect pump stations and remove debris as necessary.
  • Operate various construction equipment, including air compressors and jackhammers.
  • Learn the limits of the collection and distribution systems and become proficient in reading and interpreting maps.
  • Conduct line locating and marking throughout the service area.
  • Manage traffic control in high-traffic zones; set up street barricades and cones prior to maintenance or repair work; direct traffic around work sites.
  • Assist crews in raising manholes, repairing sewer manholes, mixing concrete, and performing masonry work; aid in the repair and maintenance of water and sewer mains and lines.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles in a clean and safe condition at all times.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, customers, and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Perform maintenance and repair tasks on the water distribution system as required.
  • Participate in training and safety meetings as necessary.
  • Fulfill related duties as assigned.
  • Be prepared to work unscheduled overtime as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining productivity and safety standards.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Willingness to work overtime on an emergency or call-in basis.
  • Desire to work outdoors year-round.
  • Ability to participate in scheduled standby duties throughout the year.
  • Strong attendance record.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus, but not mandatory.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain stationary for 50% of the time.
  • Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, twisting, grasping, and performing repetitive hand movements.
  • Capability to climb ladders and work at heights of 15 to 20 feet.
  • Normal visual acuity with or without correction.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Quick response to instructions in a noisy, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor and hand digging.
  • Capacity to lift 100 pounds with assistance and 50 pounds unassisted.
