The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) plays a vital role in delivering essential patient care and supportive services under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse. This position involves performing patient care tasks within the scope of practice, without administering medications or therapies, and does not entail independent patient care responsibilities. All duties are executed in alignment with the policies, procedures, and standards of PAM Health. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Patient Care Duties
• Collaborates with licensed personnel to coordinate patient care and unit activities, ensuring timely completion of tasks and prompt response to call lights.
• Maintains a conducive environment for nursing care by keeping patient rooms organized and assisting in the upkeep of a tidy workspace.
• Provides designated care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, adhering to physician orders and established care standards.
• Monitors vital signs and communicates significant changes to the supervising nurse, documenting findings accurately.
• Records patient intake and output on nursing worksheets, alerting the licensed nurse to any unusual patterns.
• Documents care provided and patient responses to treatment, ensuring thorough and precise records.
• Assists with the distribution and collection of meals and snacks for patients.
• Aids patients with feeding, excluding enteral feeding.
• Supports patients in activities of daily living, such as oral hygiene, bathing, mobility, and elimination, promptly reporting any changes in condition to the licensed nurse.
• Completes patient care tasks with a focus on upholding patient rights, including appropriate dental care, restraint safety, and care for patients with sensory deficits.
• Implements infection control measures during patient care activities.
• Applies growth and development principles to assess patient and caregiver needs, tailoring care to the specific age-related requirements of the patient population.
• Adheres to standards that promote patient rights, including the identification and reporting of suspected abuse, maintaining confidentiality, and addressing patient complaints appropriately.
• Engages in personal development activities to enhance skills and knowledge through various learning opportunities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Certification as a nursing assistant (CNA) as mandated by state regulations. Current BLS certification is essential.
Experience: No prior experience required. Preference for candidates with two to three years of experience in an acute care, rehabilitation, or skilled nursing environment.
Skills and Competencies:
• Strong verbal communication skills to effectively interact with patients of all ages, their families, and staff.
• Proficient in reading and writing in English, including basic medical terminology.
• Ability to accurately document patient care on designated worksheets.
• Critical thinking skills for problem-solving and decision-making.
• Organizational skills to efficiently manage nursing tasks.
• Ability to build rapport and trust with patients and their families.
• Adaptability to changing conditions and job requirements.
