Job Title: Social Service Technician

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Social Service Technician to join our team at the Newark Board of Education. As a key member of our Office of Early Childhood, you will play a vital role in providing supportive social services to our clients.

Job Summary:

The Social Service Technician will work under the supervision of a Social Work Supervisor to perform paraprofessional work involving the operation of a service program requiring specialized skills and program knowledge. This includes gathering social information about clients, making assessments, and implementing preventive, rehabilitative, and supportive treatment programs.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide supportive social services to clients, including interpreting agency policy and establishing two-way communication between client and agency.
  2. Help clients make use of public welfare and community agency services.
  3. Assist clients in preparation of forms on a selective basis.
  4. Develop resource files on community facilities such as social agencies, clinics, recreational facilities, or nursing homes.
  5. Serve as a resource person regarding community problems.
  6. Make home visits to obtain information about clients' situations and plan services.
  7. Assist clients in home management and resolving school problems of children and problems relating to housing.
  8. Visit clients to discuss reasons for failure to keep appointments.
  9. Assist in projects and surveys in the agency and gather routine data as needed.
  10. Keep adequate records and prepare brief reports and recommendations.
  11. Handle or refer telephone calls from doctors, hospital social service, surgical supply houses, etc.
  12. Inform social workers of deteriorating physical conditions.
  13. Assist isolated individuals in finding satisfying social contacts.
  14. Organize groups of recipients for developing programs for mutual economic and social self-help.
  15. Learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  16. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a social service, health, or community agency involving gathering social information from clients, identifying their needs, and providing referrals for needed services or planning and carrying out treatment plans for clients.
  • Ability to establish relationships of mutual trust and respect with clients, especially with disadvantaged people of varying ethnic and social background.
  • Ability to interpret and clarify simple basic agency policies.
  • Ability to meet and work with agency staff and persons from the community.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and make basic recommendations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently and make practical application of skills and knowledge acquired through training, experience, and education.
  • Ability to maintain pertinent records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
