REPORTS TO: Operations Manager
JOB TYPE: Full-Time, non-exempt
LOCATION: Buffalo, NY
HOURS: Monday - Friday 7:30 AM-4:00 PM
COMPENSATION: $18-20/hr, based on skills and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Material Quality Inspector role is essential for maintaining operational efficiency by evaluating incoming shipments for compliance with quality standards. This position also oversees the safe management of unloading processes, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain a safe working environment for oneself and colleagues at all times.
  • Inform management of any operational delays or inconsistencies.
  • Keep the yard organized, clean, and secure.
  • Follow simple instructions effectively and efficiently.
  • Communicate with yard personnel regarding incoming materials.
  • Ensure that quality, environmental, and safety standards are consistently met.
  • Inspect incoming loads for non-compliant materials and guide operators and drivers in safe unloading practices.
  • Evaluate scrap loads to identify restricted items, assign appropriate commodity codes, and apply deductions as necessary.
  • Assess customer materials for unacceptable items (e.g., liquids, non-metallic materials).
  • Document inspection data, including weight, grade, content, and quantity of materials.
  • Direct customers to appropriate drop-off areas.
  • Utilize 2-way radio communication with the Weigh Master and yard staff.
  • Participate in cross-training for additional tasks as required.
  • Adapt to various weather conditions while performing job duties.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as mandated.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience operating bobcats, forklifts, and loaders is advantageous.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
  • Familiarity with ferrous and non-ferrous metals is a plus.
  • Quick learner with the ability to follow directions.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Team-oriented with good organizational skills.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check.
