Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is in search of a dynamic and visionary leader to take on the role of Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs. This pivotal position will oversee strategic management and administrative functions for a substantial research portfolio, which encompasses various academic disciplines and research initiatives. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in enhancing the state's research capabilities and fostering innovation across multiple sectors.

The Vice President will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to establish a comprehensive, client-centered office dedicated to sponsored programs. This office will encompass all aspects of research administration, including pre-award processes, contract negotiations, post-award management, and compliance with financial regulations. The office's recent achievements include facilitating significant funding proposals and awards, reflecting the state's commitment to advancing research excellence.

The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record in research administration within a large, multifaceted institution. They will demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities, strategic foresight, and the ability to inspire a culture of compliance and service excellence. Key responsibilities will include:

• Developing and executing a strategic vision for research initiatives;
• Promoting and supporting research excellence across the Commonwealth;
• Establishing metrics for success and fostering a culture of continuous improvement;
• Enhancing collaboration among key stakeholders; and
• Leading, mentoring, and motivating a diverse team of professionals.

This role is designed for a leader who can balance high-quality service delivery with operational efficiency while promoting an environment that encourages innovation and teamwork. The Vice President will be expected to build strong relationships with faculty, staff, and senior administrators to advance the Commonwealth's research agenda.

Required Qualifications


• Extensive experience in research administration within a large, complex organization, coupled with in-depth knowledge of funding sources and regulatory compliance.

• Strong leadership skills with a strategic mindset and excellent communication abilities.

• Advanced degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.

• Proven understanding of the academic research funding landscape and its evolution.

• Ability to engage and energize diverse audiences, including partners and stakeholders.

• Experience in change management and fostering an inclusive environment.

• A collaborative approach to leadership with strong facilitation and relationship-building skills.

Preferred Qualifications


• Eligibility for a security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
