Job Overview and Responsibilities

The Registered Dietitian (Safety) position is a full-time role within the Nutrition Services department at the Department of State Hospitals. The selected candidate will report to the Dietetics Assistant Director or their designated representative and will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:


• Conducting Nutrition Assessments and Evaluations


• Performing comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutrition Care Process for each assigned individual

• Collaborating with treatment and interdisciplinary team members

• Developing intensive Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) plans for patients identified as being at higher nutritional risk

• Monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of nutrition interventions and outcomes

• Keeping updated patient profile information for all assigned individuals

• Implementing Nutrition Therapy Plans

• Working alongside the treatment/interdisciplinary team to execute the nutrition therapy plan

• Communicating with Nutrition Services staff and overseeing individualized patient meal/nourishment plans

• Offering consultation to unit staff and patients as issues or inquiries arise regarding MNT

• Participating in departmental meetings, professional practice groups, and hospital committees


• Engaging in Performance Improvement and Resource Training Functions


• Planning and Delivering Nutrition Group Education


• Adhering to Safety, Security, Infection Control, and Emergency Response protocols


• Maintaining professionalism and fulfilling requirements in safety, security, infection control, emergency response, and fostering a non-hostile work environment

Eligibility Criteria:
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service examination relevant to this classification, OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Currently employed with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable classification (employees seeking consideration based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Previously held permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable classification.

*Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to scheduling an interview. Proof of minimum qualifications must be submitted with your application, which may include a copy of unofficial college transcripts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. (Applicants with proof of eligibility to apply for registration will be allowed to take the examination but must become registered to qualify for appointment.)

*If it is determined that an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, their name may be removed from the eligibility list.

Working Environment

This role requires working within a secured treatment area.

Additional Requirements

Candidates MUST provide proof of registration as a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
