Special Education Teacher for Self-Contained Classrooms

Position Overview:

This role is designed for educators committed to fostering the growth of students with special needs in a self-contained classroom environment.

Compensation:

Starting salary for certified Special Education Teachers is $71,000, which includes a $10,000 hiring incentive for special education roles.

Primary Responsibilities:

As a Special Education Teacher, you will create and implement individualized learning experiences tailored to the unique needs of each student. Your role will involve:

  • Developing and adapting curricula to meet the diverse abilities of students.
  • Collaborating with parents, staff, and other professionals to formulate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Utilizing various instructional strategies and resources to enhance student learning.
  • Conducting assessments to evaluate student progress and adapting teaching methods accordingly.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Valid teaching certification in Texas with necessary endorsements for special education.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the specific needs of students with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with the ARD Committee process and IEP development.
  • Ability to modify instructional materials and approaches for diverse learners.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience:

  • Preferred experience includes one year of student teaching or an approved internship.

Key Duties:

Instructional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with educational teams to develop and implement effective IEPs.
  • Design and deliver instructional programs that cater to the individual learning styles of students.
  • Engage in regular assessment of student performance and adjust teaching strategies as needed.
  • Work closely with general education teachers to support students in mainstream classrooms.

Student Development:

  • Monitor and assess student progress through both formal and informal evaluations.
  • Provide necessary personal and medical care as outlined in IEPs.
  • Encourage participation in extracurricular activities to foster social skills.

Classroom Management:

  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
  • Implement effective behavior management strategies and interventions.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students in the classroom.

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents and guardians.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching skills.
  • Adhere to all relevant regulations and policies regarding special education.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervisory Role:

  • Oversee the work of instructional aides and volunteers as necessary.

Physical and Mental Demands:

This position may require physical activities such as lifting and managing students with disabilities, as well as maintaining emotional control in challenging situations.
