Job Description

We are seeking an experienced engineer to join our team at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). The successful candidate will have a strong background in rarefied gas dynamics and direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) methods.

The primary responsibility of this role will be to develop software capable of modeling and simulating aerodynamic performance of air-breathing inlets for very low Earth orbit (vLEO) applications.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related technical discipline. They will also have experience in rarefied gas dynamics/kinetic theory and associated modeling/simulation tools.

Additionally, the candidate should have prior coding experience with C/C++, FORTRAN, Python, and MATLAB. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also essential.

The selected candidate will be responsible for leading and contributing to planning activities for future projects and initiatives, as well as providing technical guidance for ongoing projects.

They will also be required to craft reports and presentations to communicate technical results to team members and government partners.

Qualifications include U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by the start date.

Preferred qualifications include a PhD degree in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related technical discipline, as well as five years of experience with existing DSMC tools.

The successful candidate will be part of a team that is passionate about furthering the state of the art in particle methods analysis and improving our capability of predicting impacts of air-breathing inlet design at vLEO.
