Job Summary

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Paralegal Casehandler to join the Consumer Law Project. This dynamic team provides legal advice, representation, and outreach to low-income New Yorkers in consumer matters, including credit card debt, identity theft, and medical debt. The Paralegal Casehandler will work independently with clients and collaboratively with a small team to bring greater economic justice to New Yorkers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct client intake and interviews
  • Gather, review, and organize client documents and court files
  • Provide advice, counsel, and representation under the supervision of attorneys
  • Prepare and review petitions, schedules, statements, and other bankruptcy documents
  • Assist with legal research
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with various administrative agencies, companies, and institutions
  • Assist clients in completing relevant petitions, letters, applications, and forms
  • Provide administrative support with developing affirmative litigation; reviewing, organizing and preparing discovery, and managing cases
  • Input and maintain records in a case management system
  • Create and update community education and training materials and participate in community outreach
  • Advocate and lobby on issues of importance to consumers
Requirements
  • Paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited paralegal program, bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Excellent written, oral advocacy, and computer skills (Microsoft Office and Excel) are required
  • Ability to work independently and in a team and manage a large workload
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations
  • Excellent time management, priority setting, and organizational skills, and ability to multi-task
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income individuals and immigrants, particularly in the area of economic justice, is strongly desired
  • Experience assisting people in crisis is desirable, but not required
  • Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable, but not required
