Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified individual to spearhead all product safety and field return initiatives for our Residential Air Conditioning division, which encompasses both the Retail AC and Unitary/Ductless AC teams. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 5 years of experience in research and development (R&D) and product safety, ideally within the consumer products, appliances, or HVAC sectors. This role requires close collaboration with R&D teams on matters of product safety, including field monitoring, root cause analysis, safety training, and compliance with third-party safety regulations (such as UL and CSA). This is a full-time role that may involve some travel, both domestically and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and analyze reports of safety claims from various data sources.
  • Create an enhanced database system to monitor all reported safety claims.
  • Establish a dedicated field return laboratory to investigate safety claims related to all Residential Air Conditioning products.
  • Collaborate with the quality assurance team to identify units for further evaluation in the lab.
  • Engage with external forensic experts on claims involving property damage to gather insights from both the scene and laboratory examinations.
  • Travel to third-party laboratories and/or investigation sites as necessary to assess safety claims resulting in property damage and determine the cause and origin of incidents.
  • Compile and present findings from various data sources on a monthly or as-needed basis.
  • Provide valuable insights and feedback to the R&D team regarding design and testing requirements for upcoming products.
  • Champion the establishment and refinement of product safety protocols for the team.
  • Conduct annual product safety training for an international team of engineers.
  • Mentor fellow engineers on best practices in product safety.
  • Manage diverse action items and maintain communication with various internal and external stakeholders, including local engineering teams, international divisions, legal departments, and investigators.
  • Stay informed about existing and forthcoming safety regulation changes that impact our products.
  • Collaborate with R&D teams to ensure compliance and that necessary design adjustments are made to meet regulations.
  • Actively participate in laboratory testing to diagnose unit failures.
  • Maintain effective communication with global colleagues, including occasional evening or weekend meetings to track project milestones and deliverables.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5-7 years of engineering experience, ideally in consumer electronics, appliances, or HVAC.
  • Extensive experience in investigating insurance claims and failure modes specific to Retail AC products (including PTACs, Portable ACs, Window ACs, and Dehumidifiers).
  • Familiarity with dehumidifier recall processes and failure modes.
  • Knowledge of arc tracking failure modes and experience in testing PCB designs to mitigate such issues.
  • General understanding of heat pump water heater construction.
  • Experience in conducting forced failure testing, including NiCr wire, locked rotor, and UL flammability testing.
  • Goal-oriented and self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in engineering, preferably in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Direct experience in product safety within consumer electronics, appliances, or HVAC.
  • Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator (CFEI).
  • EPA 608 certification.
  • Proven history of collaboration with global colleagues.
