Job Summary

Midea America Corp. is seeking a highly skilled Product Safety Specialist to lead all product safety and field return activities for the Residential Air Conditioning team. This role requires a strong background in R&D and product safety, with a focus on consumer products/appliances/HVAC segments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and investigate safety allegations from various data streams.
  • Develop and implement a database system to track safety allegations.
  • Establish a field return lab to investigate product safety allegations.
  • Collaborate with quality teams to determine which units to return to the lab for further evaluation.
  • Work with external investigators to understand the narrative of safety allegations and findings from scene and lab exams.
  • Travel to third-party labs and scenes to investigate safety allegations.
  • Summarize and report findings on a monthly and ad-hoc basis.
  • Provide insights and feedback to R&D teams on construction and testing requirements.
  • Develop and lead product safety training for international teams.
  • Mentor engineers on product safety best practices.
  • Manage communication with internal and external parties.
  • Stay up-to-date on existing and upcoming safety regulation changes.
  • Work with R&D teams to ensure compliance and necessary design work.
  • Be a hands-on engineer who can work in the lab to test units and root cause failures.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5-7 years' engineering experience in consumer electronics/appliances/HVAC segments.
  • Extensive experience investigating insurance claims and failure modes specific to Retail AC products.
  • Awareness of dehumidifier recall constructions and failure modes.
  • Knowledge of arc tracking failure modes and experience testing PCB designs.
  • A general understanding of heat pump water heaters.
  • Experience conducting forced failure testing.
  • Goal-oriented and self-managed.
  • Excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in engineering, preferably Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Direct product safety experience in consumer electronics/appliances/HVAC segments.
  • Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator (CFEI).
  • EPA 608 certified.
  • History of collaborating with global colleagues.
