Role Summary

As the Engineering Executive Director, you will be an integral member of the Executive Team, collaborating closely with the Executive Director to guide the organization’s strategic direction. Your primary responsibility will be to translate Ushahidi's overarching vision into a coherent strategy for the Engineering division. You will play a pivotal role in aligning the engineering team's initiatives with the organization's mission, overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of all technological systems.

Product Development

Since its inception, Ushahidi has developed innovative technology tools aimed at including underrepresented communities in critical discussions. Our open-source data collection technology serves as a versatile infrastructure, allowing users to either self-host or utilize Ushahidi's cloud-based services. The platform is designed to adapt to diverse contexts, featuring customizable surveys and data collection capabilities through various low-tech channels such as SMS, USSD, and WhatsApp.

By 2026, Ushahidi aspires to leverage technology to amplify the voices of 20 million additional individuals, ensuring that marginalized communities are acknowledged and adequately served. This vision will involve:

  • Enhancing data collection methods and utilizing AI for expedited data processing.
  • Creating an accessible and immutable data archive, ensuring citizen-generated datasets on Ushahidi's cloud are openly available and compatible with other relevant datasets.
  • Developing open-source AI models tailored to specific impact areas, revealing patterns and extracting valuable insights from Ushahidi's accessible data archives.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Direction:

  • Establishing Engineering Vision and Objectives: Aligning engineering efforts with the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Technical Guidance: Providing strategic direction to the engineering team and making critical decisions regarding technologies and architectures.
  • Team Development: Recruiting, mentoring, and nurturing a high-performing engineering team.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Partnering with other departments (e.g., product, design, marketing) to ensure alignment and successful product delivery.
  • Industry Awareness: Staying informed about industry trends and emerging technologies.

Engineering Operations Management:

  • Project Oversight: Managing the execution of engineering projects, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Resource Management: Effectively allocating engineering resources, including staffing and budgeting.
  • Quality Control: Implementing processes and standards to uphold high code quality and product reliability across all Ushahidi offerings.

Qualifications

  • Over eight years of experience in engineering leadership, including a minimum of three years managing engineering teams.
  • Experience with open-source projects and collaboration with community and UX design teams.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking with at least three years in a relevant role, capable of aligning engineering efforts with broader organizational objectives.
  • Experience leading and fostering collaboration within geographically dispersed teams.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
  • A proactive self-starter who thrives in a collaborative environment, driving projects forward.
  • Successful partnership with product management, contributing to product strategy and delivery of product roadmaps.
