Position Overview

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) is dedicated to providing free legal assistance to over 160,000 individuals and families annually, focusing on enhancing access to justice and addressing urgent needs for those living in poverty across Los Angeles. ABOUT THE ROLE:

NLSLA is seeking a licensed attorney to become a key member of our eviction defense unit. The Staff Attorney will collaborate with a vibrant team of advocates across multiple public interest law offices, engaging in a pilot initiative that evaluates the effects of legal representation on individuals, the judicial system, and the broader community within the Unlawful Detainer framework. The attorney will represent tenants facing eviction in Los Angeles County, working closely with clients throughout all phases of litigation, including intake, pleadings, discovery, motions, hearings, settlements, administrative hearings, and trials. This role also involves addressing systemic challenges through impactful litigation in both state and federal courts, partnering with community organizations to develop resources and strategies for safeguarding tenants and homeowners, providing outreach and education to tenants and community groups, and assisting in training support staff. Occasionally, the Staff Attorney may help manage our self-help legal access center.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide legal counsel and representation on various housing issues, including administrative hearings and unlawful detainer trials.
  • Manage a diverse caseload effectively.
  • Develop educational materials for community outreach.
  • Engage in community events to promote awareness and education.
  • Collaborate with pro bono partners to enhance service delivery.
  • Train and supervise students, support staff, and volunteers involved in the program.
  • Contribute to policy discussions related to housing and eviction matters.
  • Occasional travel to various branch offices, courts, and community organizations may be necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Current membership in the California Bar.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong writing, speaking, and organizational skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with clients, community organizations, attorneys, and the public.
  • A commitment to public service and advocacy for the legal rights of low-income individuals.
  • Empathy and compassion for diverse lived experiences.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

The salary range for this position is $78,000-$86,000. Benefits include:

  • A 35-hour workweek with a hybrid work schedule.
  • 15 paid holidays annually.
  • 2 to 5 weeks of vacation per year based on seniority.
