Facilities Maintenance Specialist

Position Overview:
This role is centered around delivering exceptional service, ensuring that customer satisfaction is consistently prioritized.

Utilize advanced skills to construct, repair, restore, and install various structural elements, including woodwork, masonry, and glass, employing both hand and power tools in alignment with technical specifications, established standards, and relevant regulations.

Responsibilities include assessing material costs and project timelines, as well as conducting inspections of completed work.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Install, repair, and maintain drywall across campus facilities.

2. Create and manage a comprehensive database of paint types and their applications throughout the campus.


3. Prepare surfaces for painting, which may involve stripping old paint, patching holes, and cleaning walls using various tools such as sandpaper and scrapers.

4. Fill cracks and joints with appropriate materials, utilizing caulking guns or putty knives.


5. Apply protective and decorative finishes, including paint and varnish, to both interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and furniture.

6. Oversee and guide the summer painting crew.

7. Measure and mark cutting lines on materials accurately.

8. Shape or cut materials to precise specifications using hand tools and machinery.

9. Interpret blueprints and sketches to develop project layouts and determine necessary materials.


10. Assemble and secure materials to create frameworks or props using hand tools and fasteners.


11. Construct or repair cabinetry, doors, and other wooden fixtures using woodworking tools.

12. Set up scaffolding and ladders for elevated work.

13. Remove and replace damaged components of structures using appropriate tools.

14. Install fixtures such as windows and flooring using carpentry tools.

15. Select and procure lumber and other materials as needed.


16. Build and repair various structures, including countertops and partitions.

17. Maintain campus signage and room numbers.

18. Stay updated on new techniques and regulations relevant to the maintenance mechanic carpenter/painter role.

19. Uphold Clarkson University values in all professional interactions.

20. Ensure a safe working environment and maintain high standards of cleanliness.

21. Mentor interns and apprentices in their development.

22. Participate in training to meet trade-specific and institutional standards.

23. Complete vehicle safety checks and maintain assigned vehicles responsibly.

24. Operate university vehicles in compliance with policies.

25. Perform additional duties as required.

26. Deliver friendly and effective service to faculty, staff, and students.

27. Foster a collaborative team environment.

28. Acquire a general understanding of campus layout and facilities.

29. Report campus damage and safety concerns promptly.

Qualifications:

Education:
Minimum:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:
- Associate's degree in building trades.
- Journeyman certification in related trades.

Experience:
Minimum:
- Four (4) years of experience as a carpenter or painter at a journeyman level.
- Four (4) years of painting experience.
- Documented training relevant to university standards.

Preferred:
- Five (5) or more years of experience at the journeyman level in painting.

Essential Skills:
- Strong enthusiasm for the role and a customer service mindset.
- Valid NYS driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Proficient mathematical and analytical skills.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with diverse groups.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of tools and techniques used in the painting industry.
- Familiarity with hazardous materials handling and disposal.
- Ability to perform under pressure and manage high workloads.
