Position Overview:

Job Role:
Instructional Support Specialist (Including Group Homes, Kindergarten, ISS, and other Classroom Support Roles)

The Instructional Support Specialist aids the educator in delivering the instructional curriculum within the classroom setting.

The Group Homes Support Specialist collaborates with students residing in group homes or residential treatment facilities, assisting them with their assigned tasks under the guidance of their designated virtual and special education instructors.



Required Qualifications:


All paraprofessionals commencing employment after January 1, 2007, must be classified as "Highly Qualified" as stipulated in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2003.

To be considered "Highly Qualified," applicants must fulfill one of the following criteria:

  • Hold an Associate's Degree from an accredited institution; or
  • Have completed 60 semester hours (or the equivalent) from an accredited institution; or
  • Have successfully passed a state-approved assessment (Parapro Workkeys or Parapro by ETS)

Additional Qualifications include:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior experience in a classroom environment preferred
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate effectively with others required
  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally required
  • Ability to assist with various essential functions based on the specific needs of students in the assigned classroom required
  • Basic computer proficiency required

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with their assignments as directed by the educator
  • Engage in small group activities under the supervision of the educator
  • Assist students with restroom use, transitions between classrooms, meals, and other daily activities as needed, tailored to individual student requirements


  • Participate in professional development training workshops to enhance and update skills relevant to the role
  • Assist the educator in maintaining an organized classroom environment
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
  • Specific responsibilities for the individual role will be further discussed during the interview process

Reporting Structure:


This position reports to the Principal of the assigned school and is also monitored daily by the educator in the assigned classroom.

The educator in the assigned classroom retains the responsibilities for policy-making, discipline, and student evaluation, not the support specialist.


Performance Evaluation:
Job performance will be assessed in accordance with Board Policy.

Employment Terms:


This position operates for 9 1⁄4 months (185 days) annually and is compensated according to the Support/Annual Salary Schedule in Group K unless otherwise specified.
