Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience in the broadcast news sector (radio or television) is preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the local news landscape is preferred. Strong news judgment and awareness of current events at local, national, and international levels.
  • Knowledge of the significance of sound bites, natural sound, and other audio elements in news broadcasts.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, multitask, and maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Proficient writing and interviewing abilities.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Audition, Burli, and Wide Orbit is preferred.
  • Punctuality and availability to work various shifts, including early mornings, afternoons, evenings, and overnight hours.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Ability to adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Capability to thrive in a diverse team environment.

Job Overview

WTOP produces a continuous live audio news service. The Associate Producer collaborates closely with WTOP's producers, anchors, writers, reporters, and digital team to create engaging and factually accurate newscasts. This role encompasses newsgathering and quality assurance responsibilities. The Associate Producer and Audio Producer function as part of a diverse team to position WTOP News as the premier source of local and relevant news for the Washington, DC area.

Job Responsibilities
  • Facilitate effective communication with anchors, writers, reporters, broadcast producers, and the digital team to deliver news with urgency.
  • Ensure anchors are equipped with necessary materials for seamless broadcasts, including scripts and audio files.
  • Continuously oversee producer's hourly newscasts and review all audio and scripts to uphold WTOP's quality standards.
  • Compose news articles and edit audio files, ensuring accuracy and balance in broadcast news copy under tight deadlines.
  • Maintain constant awareness of the latest local news and significant national/international stories.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to listeners through phone and email interactions.
  • Actively seek news tips from various sources.
  • Coordinate interviews with key news figures and sources for live discussions.
  • Utilize Adobe Audition to ensure audio quality meets WTOP's standards.
  • Monitor other news sources for potential stories.
  • Assist producers and perform additional duties as assigned.
