The University of Virginia's Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Specialist Senior to join the Lab of Dr. Ambati at the Center for Advanced Vision Science (CAVS).
Key Responsibilities- Manage the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including overseeing research projects, coordinating with Principal Investigators, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Supervise and train laboratory staff, including postdoctoral researchers and technicians, to ensure the successful execution of research projects.
- Develop and implement animal welfare protocols, manage the animal colony, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with veterinary staff, postdoctoral researchers, students, and Principal Investigators to meet research needs and ensure the well-being of research animals.
- Manage budgets, oversee financial processes, and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.
- Conduct research, collect and analyze data, and prepare scientific manuscripts for publication.
- Supervise and train users in equipment operation and research techniques, and provide technical support as needed.
- Develop and implement plans for research projects, discuss results with Principal Investigators, and prepare scientific manuscripts for publication.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 9 years of experience in a laboratory technician role, or equivalent experience.
- Supervisory experience and ability to manage a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
This position requires extended periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Keyboarding and other bench work are also required. Telecommuting is not permitted.
