As part of Catholic Health, Mercy Hospital is a 375-bed non-profit facility that has been addressing the healthcare needs of Nassau County and surrounding areas since 1913. Recognized among the top hospitals in New York State, Mercy features a NYS designated Stroke Center, a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage the identification and processing of all specimens, ensuring requisition and test data accuracy.
  • Handle clerical duties, including telephone support, maintaining records, and distributing reports, while providing information on tests, procedures, and specimen requirements.
  • Execute all necessary functions for the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS).
  • Address and resolve any LIS/HIS issues, escalating unresolved matters to the Coordinator or CHS IT as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and communicate shortages to the Coordinator.
  • Provide training and support for new employees and students as required.
  • Adhere to patient identification protocols, verifying requisition data and properly identifying laboratory specimens.
  • Coordinate specimen collection from outpatient areas, ensuring timely receipt of specimens.
  • For those in the Out Patient Drawing Area, perform necessary procedures.
  • Conduct phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture and finger/heel-stick collections, in accordance with established protocols.
  • Register outpatients into the HIS by gathering demographic, medical, and insurance information, explaining insurance protocols, and collecting co-payments as necessary.
  • Ensure all required signatures and forms are secured, maintaining knowledge of CPT and ICD-9 coding.
  • Perform HIS functions to create accurate computerized records.
  • Implement quality control measures for admitting information, making corrections per Hospital Admitting Department policies.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required; some college or equivalent education preferred.
  • Prior experience in a hospital setting is advantageous.
  • Phlebotomy training is preferred, along with on-the-job or equivalent training in admitting and registration procedures.
  • Strong customer service skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in typing and familiarity with clerical systems, medical terminology, and computer systems is necessary. Candidates must be able to recognize and manage hazardous conditions typical in a laboratory environment.

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is USD $24.00 per hour. Please note that this range does not encompass any differential pay or additional compensation that may apply, nor does it include the value of benefits.
