Your Role
The Assistant Production Manager is tasked with acquiring, demonstrating knowledge and skills, and achieving certification in all facets of company operations and pork industry standards. This role operates under the guidance of the relevant department leader while undertaking all responsibilities as part of a learning and development process.
Key Responsibilities
- Acquire, demonstrate proficiency, and achieve certification in all farm department functions, including fulfilling all duties outlined in the Breeding/Farrowing and Nursery/Finishing job descriptions.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of and the ability to implement company systems such as pig production processes, animal flow, farm health, genetics, and husbandry.
- Execute and master all hourly tasks under supervision, obtaining certification in each role after demonstrating competence and understanding.
- Compile and prepare necessary reports on experiences encountered and identify opportunities for enhancement.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and procedures adhered to by Smithfield LLC.
- Complete Leadership Certification as required.
- Understand and comply with company IPS, biosecurity, animal welfare, and EMS policies and procedures while performing job duties.
- Promptly report any environmental, animal care, and biosecurity concerns to the supervisor.
- Act in the capacity of Head of Department as needed by management.
- Be available for emergency situations such as alarm calls, inclement weather, power outages, personnel shortages, and environmental crises.
- Advance through the Manager Training development program and report any issues that hinder completion to Human Resources.
Qualifications
To succeed in this position, an individual must be capable of performing each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform essential functions.
- 4-year college degree in Animal Science or a related Agricultural field, or equivalent supervisory experience and/or previous swine experience; or a combination of education and experience.
- Availability to work an average of 48 hours per week, with frequent variations.
- Weekend, evening, and holiday work as needed.
- Daily showering in and out of farm facilities is required.
- Ability to lead and manage others.
- Willingness to relocate to complete training and take on the first managerial assignment.
- Proficiency in computer skills and Microsoft software.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Must be respectful, approachable, and team-oriented while fostering strong working relationships and a positive work atmosphere.
- Supportive of the mission of raising swine for the production of high-quality pork products.
- Willingness to learn and perform tasks such as euthanasia, castration, vaccinations, piglet processing, ear tagging for identification, taking blood samples, and other procedures typical of animal husbandry.
- Ability to operate a high-pressure washing system.
