Overview:


The Children's Residential Services Program is dedicated to supporting children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 who are facing significant emotional or behavioral challenges. These young individuals often struggle to thrive despite previous treatment efforts. AltaPointe Health provides a nurturing and structured environment, offering therapeutic services tailored to each child's developmental needs around the clock.

This program also extends support to families and caregivers, fostering and enhancing their connection with the child throughout the treatment and discharge process.


Children and adolescents diagnosed with concurrent mental health and substance use disorders receive specialized care within a dedicated service track.

The treatment approach actively involves consumers, families, caregivers, educational personnel, and relevant stakeholders in the planning and execution of treatment and discharge strategies.


The primary objective is to enhance each child's or adolescent's functioning level, facilitating a transition to a less restrictive treatment environment.

While the program primarily serves residents of south Alabama, referrals from across the state are welcomed.

General responsibilities

Engages in program development by identifying the needs, strengths, and challenges of consumers. Provides insights for plan modifications based on behavioral observations and contributes to discharge planning.


Implements consumer plans by tracking progress, sharing behavioral insights with team members, and maintaining communication with consumers, families, and referral sources. Co-facilitates educational and community groups, encouraging consumer participation in activities, ensuring safety, and providing input during shift reports.

Oversees therapeutic program specialists in collaboration with clinical coordinators, assisting in the onboarding and training of new staff members, serving as a mentor and resource.


Attends all mandatory training sessions and seeks information from meetings when unable to attend.

Contributes to maintaining a therapeutic environment within the assigned program.

Facilitates a supportive atmosphere by offering positive reinforcement and appropriate consequences to consumers.


Maintains accurate documentation related to consumer programs, departmental activities, and other required records, including observations and incident reports.

Provides necessary assistance to nursing staff for consumer treatment as directed by LPN/RN, ensuring a safe and orderly environment for consumers.


Collaborates with the Administrator, Clinical Coordinator, and Nurse Coordinator to address milieu-related challenges, training needs for program specialists, and overall management of the therapeutic environment.


Assists consumers in daily living activities aligned with their individual plans, needs, and developmental levels.

Performs clerical and administrative tasks as assigned to support departmental and facility operations.

Accompanies and transports consumers as required.

Engages in activities that promote professional growth and development.

Exhibits conduct that aligns with the facility's ethical standards.

Maintains a professional demeanor in interactions with consumers and colleagues.

Adheres to facility safety, infection control, and security protocols.

Supports both internal and external customer service standards.

Ensures appropriate supervision at all times, never leaving consumers unattended.

This includes providing coverage for program specialists in the event of staff absence until proper relief is secured.


Demonstrates behavior consistent with the facility's code of ethics, AHS compliance program, and service excellence standards, serving as a role model for peers and assisting them in understanding these principles.

Ensures adherence to unit schedules as per program guidelines.


Recognizes crisis situations and effectively de-escalates and resolves them.

Provides Ukeru training and re-training to staff.

Delivers MindSet re-training to staff.

Applies Ukeru and MindSet techniques in accordance with AltaPointe policies and procedures.

Collaborates with consumers and staff to maintain cleanliness in consumer rooms and common areas, supervising and delegating housekeeping duties as necessary.


Assists in establishing a relief system for staff breaks and lunches in coordination with the unit nurse and/or nurse coordinator.

Offers relevant input regarding daily staff delegation.

Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Supervision and consultation

Seeks supervision and consultation as necessary.

Welcomes and implements suggestions for improvement.

Actively works to enhance professional skills.

Provides regular feedback to supervisors regarding work-related issues.

Clinical record keeping

Documents promptly in accordance with AltaPointe policies.


Records consumer issues, progress on treatment goals, and services in a clear and concise manner.

Ensures legibility in documentation.

Exhibits courteous and respectful attitudes towards consumers, visitors, and colleagues.

Treats consumers and coworkers with dignity and compassion.

Respects the privacy and confidentiality of consumers and coworkers.

Maintains a pleasant and cooperative demeanor.

Assists consumers and visitors as needed.

Physical Requirements of the Job:
Frequent standing, sitting, and walking in short bursts of 5 to 10 minutes. Occasionally requires pacing with consumers for indeterminate periods.

Ability to change positions as necessary based on consumer behavior.

Occasional forward bending while kneeling to reach items.

Occasional need to perform a full squat or lunge from a standing position.


Occasional maintenance of back extension while lying on the stomach.

This position may be held for several minutes.


Occasional ability to support body weight on one knee and elbow on the same side.

Occasional kneeling and reaching towards the floor.


Ability to lift up to 10 pounds from the floor to various heights, including overhead, occasionally during shifts.

Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds to assist with daily living activities as required. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist level.


Strong grip required for using keys and maintaining contact with consumers during restraint procedures.

Pushing/pulling force of up to 25 pounds may be required occasionally during shifts.


Ability to move quickly to assist coworkers with consumers in crisis situations, including jogging or running up to 0.1 mile.


Therapeutic activities may occur both inside and outside the facility, necessitating physical requirements for play or games.



Qualifications:

Minimum

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant mental health field is preferred. Previous experience in a mental health setting, particularly with children and adolescents, is advantageous. Supervisory experience is preferred. A valid driver's license in the state of residence, meeting age requirements for driving, and proof of liability insurance are required.

Knowledge of child/adolescent specialties:
Understanding of psychiatric disorders.

Familiarity with growth and development across intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical domains.

Awareness of cultural diversity.

Knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention, and strategies for acute and non-violent consumers.

Understanding of educational methods for individuals with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders.

Knowledge of psychiatric rehabilitation principles.

Subject matter expertise in Mindset and the ability to demonstrate techniques effectively.
