The Accommodations and Educational Support Specialist plays a vital role in empowering students and faculty to reach their full potential by providing support for academic success and opportunities for increased skills in teaching and learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Director of the Center for Educational Enhancement in program design and implementation, scholarship, faculty enhancement, and student support services.
- Provide a professional, client-centered, and respectful atmosphere that supports the dignity and worth of all students and faculty seeking services from the office.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define an innovative strategic vision for student and faculty academic support needs and student academic counseling.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive program of student academic enhancement and support services, including workshops, support groups, small group sessions, and online programming, designed to bolster academic success and professional development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the delivery of a comprehensive program of faculty academic enhancement services, including workshops, peer groups, small group sessions, and online programming, designed to foster academic enhancement and professional development.
- Provide consultation to Deans, Program Directors, and faculty regarding students of concern and work collaboratively with them to develop individual improvement plans for students on academic probation or students identified by their respective Academic Progress Committee for special academic assistance.
- Collaborate with departments to evaluate programs and identify additional opportunities to improve academic support services for students studying on campus, students engaged in off-campus clinical rotations, and for students enrolled in online courses.
- Deliver individualized academic support services to provide assistance to students in the development of effective study, time-management, and test-taking strategies.
- Support faculty development and strategic efforts for innovation and enhancement of the DMU academic enterprise.
- Collaborate with academic programs to ensure effective outreach and awareness of student support and accommodations services.
- Interpret learning preferences and apply strategies to specific courses.
- Assist with the peer tutoring program, which may include training and supervising the tutors, and evaluating the program for overall effectiveness.
- Collaborate with departments to help develop and suggest individualized programs for students who have been unsuccessful on Board exams.
- Provide ADA services in relation to student accommodations according to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff regarding the implementation of course/instructional design and effective use of learning technologies and learning management systems, giving special attention to compliance with accessibility and usability principles.
- Contribute to regular reports regarding service level and conduct evaluations to assess the effectiveness of services and implement changes to ensure continued quality improvement.
- Develop and maintain appropriate referral relationships and service linkages for students requiring extended support.
- Develop and maintain relationships with college and program leadership to ensure appropriate support for faculty academic needs in teaching, learning, assessment, digital accessibility, and educational scholarship.
- Participate in and successfully complete all University required training, including but not limited to discrimination/harassment, and code of conduct.
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Masters degree is required in educational psychology, counseling, adult education, reading, or related field.
- Minimum five years professional experience, preferably in an academic health science center or university setting providing student or adult education services.
- Administrative experience in college or university center; experience developing programs for health professions/graduate students is preferable.
- Expertise in the area of learning, reading, or study strategies as demonstrated by previous work record or academic training.
- Experience in working with adult students.
- Must have a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Essential Skills:
- Understand and advocate the guiding philosophy of One University.
- Able to train staff, faculty, and students.
- Knowledge of all academic programs on campus, and familiarity with their policies and procedures as defined in student handbooks.
- A thorough understanding of learning theories, learning strategies, and individualized diagnostic-prescriptive academic counseling is essential.

- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplines with administrators, faculty, and/or students.

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills essential to effectively interact and communicate at all levels, with emphasis on being able to relate to students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and/or conclusions to problems.
- Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Ability to analyze data and prepare reports.
- Sensitivity to issues and stresses typically faced by graduate health profession students.
- Knowledge of special academic needs for students from underrepresented groups and knowledge of resources available to these students.
- Able to establish a receptive student-centered environment in which students are comfortable discussing their academic problems.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to function under pressure.
