Job Overview

Position Summary:

The role is essential in supporting the Facilities Services team by executing custodial tasks within designated areas. Responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness in building interiors and preparing for campus events, which may involve handling, arranging, and setting up furniture such as chairs and tables. The position also encompasses completing tasks that cannot be performed during regular hours, including trash disposal and classroom sanitation. Additionally, the custodian will respond to urgent requests from security during their shift.

Key Responsibilities:

This job description serves as a guideline and may not encompass all duties required. Employees may be tasked with additional job-related responsibilities as directed by their supervisor, with reasonable accommodations considered.

  • Assist with cleaning and custodial needs for events and activities.
  • Utilize vacuum cleaners, both upright and canister types, to clean all designated areas.
  • Employ a mop and bucket to maintain hard surface floors in assigned locations.
  • Follow custodial guidelines to scrub, rinse, and wax hard surface floors as needed.
  • Operate automatic low-speed and high-speed buffers to polish hard surface floors.
  • Sanitize all relevant surfaces in restrooms.
  • Adhere to instructions from both the university and manufacturers to mix and apply cleaning chemicals appropriately.
  • Disinfect toilets, showers, sinks, cabinets, floors, and walls using liquid and dry cleaners as per custodial protocols.
  • Assist in moving equipment and furniture as required.
  • Review the campus event schedule for assigned areas and consult with supervisors for specific event preparation instructions.
  • Maintain accurate time records in compliance with university policies.
  • Report maintenance needs using the appropriate online work order forms.
  • Manage keys for assigned areas responsibly.
  • Clear snow from building entrances using a broom or shovel.
  • Participate in all required meetings.
  • Submit time-off requests in a timely manner using available facilities services resources.
Required Skills and Abilities:

To succeed in this role, individuals must demonstrate proficiency in essential duties. The following skills and abilities are considered minimum requirements:

  • Ability to read and understand custodial manuals and instructions.
  • Proficiency in English to follow safety protocols and procedures.
  • Physical capability to lift, bend, and squat for event preparations and equipment handling.
  • Skill in setting goals, prioritizing tasks, and assessing progress.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills for effective interaction with various stakeholders.
  • Basic mathematical skills for chemical mixing and measurements.
  • Responsibility for the security of equipment and supplies.
  • Capability to climb ladders up to ten feet for maintenance tasks.
  • Visual acuity for reading instructions and performing tasks.
  • Auditory ability to respond to alarms and communications.
  • Physical strength to lift and carry up to 45 pounds.
  • Writing skills for completing work orders and requests.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively for event setups.
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly required to use their hands for handling tasks. Frequent standing, walking, reaching, and climbing are necessary. Occasional stooping, kneeling, and crawling may be required. Employees must be able to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Employees may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and various cleaning chemicals. The work environment typically has a moderate noise level.
