Overview - Key Responsibilities:

AMSC is seeking a skilled Process Engineer specializing in the production of oxide-coated metal foils utilized in high-temperature superconductor wire manufacturing. The selected candidate will be tasked with maintaining routine production operations, diagnosing issues when processes deviate from expected specifications, and implementing process enhancements. This role necessitates establishing intricate relationships between complex equipment settings and product outcomes, requiring advanced problem-solving skills and extensive experience with vacuum deposition systems, pressure monitoring, heat zones, and mass/liquid flow controllers. Strong analytical capabilities are essential.

Daily Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing engineering oversight for the processes and operation of equipment involved in the annealing of metal foils and subsequent sputtering of oxide films using reel-to-reel technology.
  • Managing the procurement of raw materials and essential supplies in collaboration with external suppliers.
  • Enhancing process and equipment reliability through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Diagnosing process and equipment challenges, including conducting failure analyses on semi-finished products.
  • Creating and maintaining process documentation such as Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and Material Specifications.
  • Generating reports that detail process status, including Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts.
  • Assisting in the commissioning of equipment upgrades and leading the associated process qualification efforts.
  • Training and overseeing technicians and operators to ensure operational excellence.

Qualifications - Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing setting.

Essential Skills and Competencies:

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in thin film deposition (PVD) – mandatory.
  • Hands-on experience with high vacuum systems – mandatory.
  • Experience with high-temperature heat treating furnaces/ovens – mandatory.
  • Familiarity with metal rolling or deformation techniques – preferred.
  • Experience in foil/web handling – preferred.

Operational Skills:

  • Expertise in Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Ability to conduct failure analysis of materials.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for equipment.
  • Effective verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to schedule work, coordinate resources, and execute plans effectively.
  • Experience in purchasing supplies and parts.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
