In conjunction, the Black to the Future Action Fund, a 501(c)4 entity, focuses on cultivating independent, progressive political power within Black communities at the municipal and state levels. Our mission is to advocate for policies that enhance the quality of life for Black individuals, ensuring they receive the dignity, safety, and empowerment that every person deserves.
The role of Community Engagement Specialist is a collaborative position shared between the Black Futures Lab and the Black to the Future Action Fund.
Position Summary:
As a member of our team of social justice advocates, Community Engagement Specialists will actively inform and mobilize voters through direct outreach methods, including door-to-door canvassing and phone/text banking. Our primary objective is to engage Black voters on economic issues, motivating them to participate in the electoral process and support candidates who prioritize the economic well-being of Black communities. This position reports directly to the Lead Organizer.
Position Type and Compensation:
This is a temporary, part-time role, with an expected commitment of 20 hours per week. Compensation is set at an hourly rate.
Location: Remote work with community engagement in designated areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Lead Organizer or Lead Canvasser.
- Engage with numerous individuals daily through canvassing and outreach efforts.
- Accurately document interactions with potential voters using designated tools.
- Complete daily reporting with precision.
- Demonstrate a commitment to understanding current political issues.
Essential Qualifications:
- Participation in mandatory orientation and training sessions.
- Access to a compatible mobile device for data collection.
- Ability to connect with Black voters from diverse backgrounds.
- Adherence to provided scripts while delivering accurate information.
- Commitment to achieving outreach targets.
- Reliability in attending scheduled canvassing sessions.
- Proficiency in using mobile technology and web applications for data entry.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, maintaining a positive demeanor.
- Flexibility to adapt to the evolving needs of outreach efforts.
Specific Duties for Canvassing:
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and perform light physical activities.
- Ability to navigate using maps.
- Capacity to walk significant distances for outreach purposes.
Specific Duties for Phone & Text Outreach:
- Utilize personal or provided devices to contact constituents following a provided script.
- Ability to learn and effectively communicate scripted messages.
- Engage with multiple lists of contacts daily.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation, with a gas stipend available for those who qualify.
- Previous experience in campaign work, sales, or customer service.
- Bilingual capabilities in English-Spanish or Haitian Creole are advantageous.
Travel Requirements:
Reliable transportation to outreach locations is necessary.
Employment Terms:
This position is classified as temporary, part-time, and non-exempt.
