Role Summary
The Advanced Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in supporting the surgical team by serving as the primary scrub technician responsible for managing instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical operations. This position requires constant vigilance to maintain a sterile environment and a commitment to ongoing learning in specialized surgical techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the availability and functionality of surgical supplies and equipment.
- Prepare the surgical area by opening sterile supplies and setting up the operating table.
- Maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure, ensuring all team members are properly attired.
- Assist the surgeon by anticipating needs and passing instruments and supplies as required.
- Conduct perioperative counts of instruments and supplies in collaboration with the circulating nurse.
- Prepare instruments for sterilization and assist in maintaining specialty surgical services.
- Educate and orient new surgical staff and students to the unit.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of unit goals.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
- Successful completion of an accredited surgical technologist program or military training equivalent.
- A minimum of two years of full-time experience in a surgical technologist capacity.
- Demonstrated competency in performing essential functions across multiple specialties.
Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to maintain a fast-paced work environment while meeting the needs of multiple surgeons.
Working Conditions
This role involves working in a healthcare setting with potential exposure to hazardous materials. Candidates must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
